Reindeer
The Reindeer Rangifer tarandus, also known as the Caribou in North America, is a deer species native to the Arctic, subarctic, and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It is the only species of deer where both males and females can grow antlers.
The Reindeer's coat is thick and insulating, and its hooves are specially adapted to help it walk on snow and ice. They are famous for their massive seasonal migrations, traveling in large herds over hundreds of miles in search of food. Their diet consists mainly of lichens, especially during the winter, which they can find by digging through the snow.
Reindeer have been domesticated for thousands of years by indigenous peoples, who use them for transportation, food, and clothing. These domesticated reindeer are often referred to as "caribou" when they are wild. However, this can be confusing as the term "caribou" is also used to refer to wild populations of the same species.
Reindeer populations are facing threats from climate change, which affects their access to food and their migration routes. The Reindeer is a powerful symbol of the wild, cold north and a crucial part of the ecosystems and cultures of the Arctic.
