Classification Overview
In 1970, Michener et al. defined "systematic biology" and "taxonomy" in relation to one another. Systematic biology is the study of the diversity of organisms and their relationships, while taxonomy is the science of describing, naming, and classifying organisms.
Animals belong to the Eukarya domain. This domain, also known as Eukaryota, includes all organisms whose cells contain a membrane-bound nucleus to house their genetic material. Within the Eukarya domain, animals are further classified into the Animalia kingdom, which encompasses all multicellular organisms that are heterotrophic, meaning they obtain their food by consuming other organisms.
From there, animals are classified into various phyla, classes, orders, families, genera, and species based on their physical characteristics and genetic relationships.
Understanding the classification of animals helps scientists communicate about different species, study their relationships, and explore the diversity of life on Earth.
