Aves (Avian)

Information on Aves (Avian)

Aves, or birds, are a class of endothermic (warm-blooded) vertebrates that are easily recognized by their feathers. Feathers are a unique feature of birds and serve many purposes, including insulation, flight, and display. Their forelimbs are modified into wings, and most species are capable of flight. Birds have a lightweight skeleton with hollow bones, which is an adaptation for flight. They have a beak instead of teeth, and a four-chambered heart. Birds reproduce by laying hard-shelled eggs. Their reproductive strategy and warm-blooded nature allow them to live in a vast range of environments, from the arctic to the equator. This class is incredibly diverse, ranging from small hummingbirds to large, flightless ostriches. Birds play a vital role in ecosystems, acting as pollinators, seed dispersers, and predators.
