Africa

Africa is the cradle of humanity, a continent where some of the earliest human ancestors first walked the Earth. It is a land of incredible natural wonders and vibrant cultures.

As the world's second-largest continent, Africa is geographically diverse, boasting a rich mosaic of landscapes, wildlife, and history.

General Geography & Location

At approximately 30.4 million km2, Africa is the second-largest continent. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Indian Ocean to the east, the Mediterranean Sea to the north, and the Red Sea and Suez Canal to the northeast, which separates it from Asia.

Africa is home to the world's longest river, the Nile River, which flows through northeastern Africa. The Sahara Desert, the largest hot desert in the world, dominates the northern third of the continent. The Great Rift Valley is a geological feature stretching for thousands of kilometers, and Mount Kilimanjaro is the continent's highest peak.

Natural Habitats

Africa's climate is predominantly tropical, with hot, humid weather near the equator. However, it also has temperate zones in the northern and southern parts, as well as vast arid regions.

The continent is famous for its savannas and grasslands, which are home to large herds of animals. There are also expansive tropical rainforests in the Congo Basin, as well as deserts like the Sahara and the Kalahari.

Africa's wildlife is globally renowned and includes iconic animals like the lion, elephant, giraffes, zebras , and many primate species.

Population and Demographics

With over 1.4 billion people, Africa is the second most populous continent.

The population is unevenly distributed, with higher densities along the Mediterranean coast, the Nile River, and the western coast. The Sahara Desert and other inhospitable regions are very sparsely populated.

Conclusion

Africa is a continent of immense physical diversity, from its iconic deserts and savannas to its lush rainforests. This variety supports a massive and growing population, which is concentrated in specific regions.

Africa's unique geography and vast natural resources have fostered a wealth of biodiversity and have shaped a rich, complex human history that continues to influence the world today.
