Ice Floes

Ice floes are vast, flat expanses of sea ice, typically less than 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in their longest dimension. These dynamic and ever-shifting platforms form in the frigid polar regions of the Arctic and Antarctic, playing a crucial role in the global climate system and providing a unique habitat for a variety of specialized wildlife. Formed from the freezing of seawater, or from the breakup of larger ice sheets, ice floes are constantly in motion, driven by ocean currents and winds. This continuous movement creates a constantly changing landscape of open leads (cracks in the ice), pressure ridges (where ice has buckled), and melt ponds (pools of fresh water on the surface of the ice).

The ecological significance of ice floes cannot be overstated. They are the primary hunting and breeding grounds for iconic polar species. For example, polar bears rely on ice floes to hunt seals, their main food source, and to travel across vast distances. Seals, in turn, use the ice floes as resting platforms and nurseries for their pups, offering a degree of protection from predators.
