Red Junglefowl

The Red Junglefowl Gallus gallus is a tropical bird found in Southeast Asia, and it holds a special place in history as the wild ancestor of the domestic chicken. It has a striking appearance, with the males (roosters) having a vibrant mix of glossy feathers, a large red comb, and long tail feathers. The females (hens) are a more camouflaged brown.

Red Junglefowl live in forests and are ground-dwelling birds, feeding on seeds, fruits, insects, and other invertebrates. They are known for their loud and distinct calls, including the familiar "cock-a-doodle-doo" crow.

The domestication of the Red Junglefowl is believed to have begun thousands of years ago in Asia, and through selective breeding, it has given rise to the countless chicken breeds we know today. This domestication has had a profound impact on human civilization, providing a consistent source of food and eggs.

The Red Junglefowl is still found in the wild, but its populations are threatened by habitat loss and hybridization with domestic chickens. The Red Junglefowl is a living link to the origins of one of the world's most important domestic animals.
